The End Of The Weekend
by Anthony Evan Hecht

A dying firelight slides along the quirt
Of the cast iron cowboy where he leans
Against my father's books. The lariat
Whirls into darkness. My girl in skin tight jeans
Fingers a page of Captain Marriat
Inviting insolent shadows to her shirt.

We rise together to the second floor.
Outside, across the lake, an endless wind
Whips against the headstones of the dead and wails
In the trees for all who have and have not sinned.
She rubs against me and I feel her nails.
Although we are alone, I lock the door.

The eventual shapes of all our formless prayers:
This dark, this cabin of loose imaginings,
Wind, lip, lake, everything awaits
The slow unloosening of her underthings
And then the noise. Something is dropped. It grates
against the attic beams. I climb the stairs
Armed with a belt.

A long magnesium shaft
Of moonlight from the dormer cuts a path
Among the shattered skeletons of mice.
A great black presence beats its wings in wrath.
Above the boneyard burn its golden eyes.
Some small grey fur is pulsing in its grip.

1.      What is the meaning of the firelight in the poem? Does it matter that it is loose?
2.      What are the senses that were activated in the poems in you? How are each sense involved?

3.      What does the presence of the great black presence have to do with the love affair? What is its effect (if any) to the lover?

1.For me,the dying firelight symbolizes the divine light, one that resembles a light to check the wrong deeds of man or to enlighten them to avoid doing sinful acts. This dying fireflight was intentionally hit by the quirt, meaning man is about to do something sinful. Squirt for me symbolzes evil.

2.It does matter because for me,the persona is aware that he will be doing a sinful act with his girl that is why he intentionally put out the fire.

3.These are the senses that were activated as I read the poem:
3.1. Kinesthetics- the movement of the wind against the headstones of the dead and wails in the trees alerts me like I was in there with them and feeling it.
3.2 Tactile- the touching of the skin and the feeling of the girl's nails.
3.3 Visual- a lot of visuals were involved. From the description of the girl's tight jeans to the description of the second floor, the lip,the lake, and the taking off of underwears. The descripton was very vivid.Even the tracing of the moonlight from the dormer and the scattered skeletons of mice.
3.4 Auditory- the noise of the bird from the attic was mentioned and its flapping was described as wrathful.

Each senses created a vivid imagination of the place and what they did. These senses were linked to the other to create a imagery in the poem.

5. In my opinion, the presence of the great black does not only mean the disrupter of their lovemaking with the noise it made, but also symbolizes all-seeing watcher and a knocker to their conscience. What they have done on the second floor was sinful and the persona in the poem was mentally disturbed because he was aware with what they were doing. It is evident that he heard the noise alone and he went to the attic alone. The presence of this bird affects them in a way that consequences will always be there after doing sin.Hence, the visualizing of mice skeletons and the boneyard.

1. For me, the meaning of the firelight in the poem is that, it is something which aims to somehow enlighten up the mind of the persona and the girl against the wrongful acts they have done inside the cabin, which they have depicted as a cabin of loose imaginings. This also aims to enlighten the minds of every single person living in this world that in every trespasses we used to do in every single day, there would always be a time and a room for forgiveness and a chance to change everything, that's when we as a believer of God realizes His presence and values His mightiness bounded with His undying love to us.

2.Yes. it definitely matters that it is loose because it basically builds up the emphasis of the wrongful act made by the persona and his mate.

3.This poem somehow activates my sense of touch, that's when i read the line "She rubs against me and I feel her nails". Another sense that was activated by the poem is my sense of sight, which was built by the line "A long magnesium shaft of moonlight from the former cuts a path among the shattered skeletons of mice". lastly, is my sense of hearing, that's because of the line "And then the noise. Something is dropped. It grates against the attic beams".

These senses created such useful imagery that basically helps me interpret the poem as I go along with my analysis.

4. For me, I think, the presence of the great black have so much to do with the love affair. as described in the poem that this blackness has indeed a wrathful presence, it really depicts how sinful was the thing they've done inside the cabin. This perhaps proves that in every wrong doing that a person would commit, there would always be a corresponding consequence that will inevitably occur and that is something very important in order to let that person realize every single sin he/she commits in life.

1. For me, the firelight in the poem symbolizes the words or intervention of God. It is cited in the first line that the firelight is dying, meaning, it is losing grip of what should be its purpose to the room which is to light it. For me, it mattered that it was loose because losing the light invites wicked and nasty ideas to the mind of one. This sometimes, if not all the time, is one of the greatest reason why people commit sin through doing sexual acts without marriage.
2. The senses that were activated in the poem were the following:
a. Tactioception/Tactile – In the second stanza in the second line it was said that “ an endless wind whips against the headstones of the dead and wails”, this line gave me the sensation to feel the endless, strong wind that was gushing that night when the two of them made love. Imaging also that they were across the lake with lots of tress, the endless wind could be very cold. There is also the line “she rubs against me and I feel her nails” which vibrantly portrayed their lovemaking.
b. Ophthalmoception/Visual – Upon reading the poem there are a lot of things that I saw using only the lines that was written. One is how the guy describes the skin-tight jeans and the insolent shadows on his girls’ shirt, she seems to be very sexy. There is also the slow unloosening of her underthings and the long magnesium shaft that described something bad is going to happen.
c. Audioception/Hearing – the line wherein there was a noise in the attic made me imagined that something has drop there. There is also a great black presence that beats its wings which for me portrayed a bird that is very large and strong.
3. The great black presence for me is interference of God again which was mislaid in the first part of the poem. The boy, upon hearing the noise could have just let it pass and say that it doesn’t matter. But he didn’t. Instead, he went on to the attic to see what happened. In effect, the suppose-to-be “lovemaking” didn’t happened at all. For me, this is God’s way of saving them.

1) In a literal aspect the firelight means a fire that serves as a light that slides along the quirt. However, as it describe as a "dying" firelight it then means to me as a transition that something "bad" around that is happening.

2) Yes, it does matter because it leads to a wrong doing of this two individual.

3) The sense of TOUCH, HEARING and VISUAL.
TOUCH for the lines "She rubs against me and I feel her nails."
HEARING for the lines "And then the noise. Something is dropped. It grates."
VISUAL for the lines "he leans against my father's book." "My girl in skin tight jeans." "Outside, across the lake." " In the trees for all we have and have not sinned."

4) Each of these senses are involved by creating an imagination and give a hand to let the readers visualize what is happening
in the poem.

5) For me the presence of the great black in their supposed love making has something to do as a signal. A signal for them to stop because it is something that must not done. Its presence also as well as the noise and the bird in the last stanza can be taken as a physical proof of a "hesitation" in the part of the speaker.

1.For me,the firelight does matter when it is loose, because it symbolized as the guide not to get the man fear in the dark and in order for him not to get tempted with such sinful actions because, of the noise that bothered him. I think, the firelight gives him peace of mind in the midst of darkness so that when the firelight runs out of fire I think something unusual might happen.

2. The senses that are involved in the poem are;

-Visual- The second floor, the lake, the girl in skin tight jeans, the unloosening of her underthings, climb the stairs armed with a belt.

-Tactile- The feeling of touching the girl nails in his body. Upon reading this line I found it exciting.

-Auditory- The noise of the bird that beats it wings in wrath, the shattered skeletons of mice.

•These senses is very important in the poem for it gives us idea to understand merely what is really the real image behind the poem.

3.In my opinion, the great black presence is only a disturbance in that two person in doing such love affair, maybe it is a sign for them to stop what they are doing for it is not rigt, or maybe the great black presence represent as God who is merely watching them to make them awake by their conscience that they must face consequences upon doing such lovemaking.

1. In my own opinion, the meaning of the firelight in the story is somewhat a signal because fire means light that could brighten anything and in the poem, it stated there that the firelight is loose or dying. Its being loose matters because it would mean darkness, and when there is darkness, bad or sinful things could happen.

2. The senses that have been activated while reading the poem are my sense of sight and hearing. The sense of sight because I can imagine and see upon reading the poem especially in the line “My girl in skin tight jeans Fingers a page of Captain Marriat” and in the sense of hearing, I too, heard a noise in reading the line “And then the noise. Something is dropped. It grates against the attic beams.”

3. It has to do something about the love affair because the great black presence could be considered as a wakeup call for the two that what they are doing is not good. The effect for them would maybe they would know how to control their emotions and would realize that there is a right time for everything

1.The firelight symbolized in the poem as a sign that if it's totally lights off then the wrong act of a man began. As what it has mentioned in the poem that "the dying firelight as it slides along the quirts then the Lariat whirls into darkness so I think it means that when the light is off the man could do easily the wrong deed as it against the commandments of the Almighty God.

Yes, the firelight does matter when it loose because as for the man, he hit it by the quirt to become totally off in order for him to do the sinful act easily.

2.These are the senses I have found in the poem:
*Tactile-the feeling when the girl rubs the persona's skin and the feeling of the girl nails touching his body.

*Auditory-the noise of the bird when it wings flaps wrathfully.

*Visual-the image of a girl with a skin tight jeans and the long magnesium shaft of the moonlight.

These senses help to create a clear image or idea if what is the poem all about in order to make it more understandable.

3.I think the presence of the black presence represent as a watcher for what the man and his girl did such sinful act and I think also that it presence represent as a warning to the man and his girl as it flaps it wings wrathfully to stop the lustful thing they did.

1. In my own perception, the meaning of the firelight in the poem is simply a light or a source of light in the cabin but then it is stated that the firelight is dying that is why I come up with the idea that the dying firelight is a form of distraction or signal in order to distract the persona and his mate to the sinful act that they might do. It does really matter that the firelight is loose because it is a way to let the bad deeds of the lover stop.
2. The senses that were activated in the poem are my:
*Sense of sight- as the persona describes his girl with a skin tight jeans and as stated in the poem that a long magnesium shaft of moonlight from the dormer cuts a path.
*Sense of touch- as the girl rubs against the persona and he feels her nails.
*Sense of hearing- the sound of the lake and wind that whips against the headstones of the dead and wails.
3. For me, the presence of the great black presence in the poem is a disturbance or warning to the persona and his mate and it has to do with the love affair that they have because in the first place, they are doing a sexual act and that sexual act is a sin wherein it can only be done in the right time and right place that is why the great black presence warned and disturbed them in order to stop what they are doing.

1. For me, firelight means enlightenment which shows only the bright side of every mankind. It depicts the goodness of every people possess. I can see that in the poem, a sin is being committed.
2. In my own opinion, it matters. If my perception above is true, each of our firelight is loose naturally. It is for us to decide wether we maintain the balance of light and darkness. It is for us to decide to kill it off or to embrace only the darkness.
3. The senses that were activated in the poem are first, visual, it is very evident in the poem. I think almost all the lines activates our visual sense. Second is auditory. "We rise together to the second floor.Outside, across the lake, an endless wind Whips against the headstones of the dead and wails". Lastly, tactile. "She rubs against me and I feel her nails.Although we are alone, I lock the door." It is very evident in this lines.
4. The senses makes the audience or the reader understand and imagine what is really happening in the poem. Because of our senses we feel all of the emotions this world could offer.
5. The great black presence serves as an eyeopener to the persona. It made the persona realized the consequences of their sinful act.

1. In my opinion, the firelight in the poem means faith. The dying faith was striked by a quirt which symbolizes wrongdoings.

2.Yes, the faith the was loose because the persona's loyalty to God was dying and it was being filled in by the thought if doing an act which was immoral.

2. The senses involved in the poem were:

First was visual. My visual sense was activated by the lines where in the persona described his girl in his skin tight jeans, and the unloosening of the underthings and as he locked the door. These lines gave me an explicit picture of events.

Second was auditory. As I read, I heard the endless wind whipping which I guess a voice that was crying from above that trying to stop the sinful act of the two.
Third was tactile. The lines in the poem "she rubs against me and I feel her nails" activated my sense of touch.

These senses effectively brought me to the events in the poem as if I was there watching what was happening. It opened my imagination.

3. The great black presence in the poem represents a watchful and observant God that will give punishment to those who are sinned. The great black there was in wrath, so the persona is aware that he is doing a sinful act that is why he locked the door although he was alone because he knew that someone was watching him and that is why he was filled with guilt.

1. In my opinion, the firelight in the poem symbolizes about a chance or opportunity that gives light about the future. But the light is about to die because of wrong choices. yes it matters because just like the fire light it is the only light that shines in the darkness. But when you neglect to take the opportunity because of wrong choices it will slowly die or fade away.

2. The senses that are active in me while reading the poem were:
sight- because I can see the setting that is being described in the poem.
Touch- When the persona said that he felt the nails of the girl.
auditory- the sound of the lake, an endless wind whips against the head stones of the dead and wail. These senses helped me to feel the meaning of the poem.

3. The great black presence represents about justice. It has something to do with the consequences in every choices that is made. in love affair, consequences will always be there no matter how a person tries to hide it. There will always be consequences in every sinful act.

1.) The firelight in the poem conveys the light that brightens up the thoughts and intentions of the persona. With the presence of the radiance from the firelight nothing immoral will happen. Yet, it does matter; because as it is being loose the firelight eventually loses its glow that will gradually pervades darkness to take place. Darkness as it entails the sense where terrible things and sinful deed usually happens.

2.) A lot of imagery in the poem activated particular senses in my nerve; these are my visual, auditory and kinesthetic senses. In terms of visual sense, this is evident on this line:
A dying firelight slides along the quirt
Of the cast iron cowboy where he leans
Against my father's books.
I vividly imagined the firelight as it loses its glow as it eventually glides along the leash that caused darkness. In my auditory sense, it came to life when a sudden noise intervene the persona and his lover. The line that says,” And then the noise. Something is dropped. It grates
against the attic beams.” And lastly my kinesthetic sense, a feeling of being shocked and terrified aroused in me as I read the last stanza where “a great black presence” emerged.

3.) The ``great black presence” that emerged in the poem greatly affect the love affair that is happening between the two. It likely represents disturbance that intervenes the discreet relationship of immoral act of the sinful lovers. However, it may also likely to represent a mad wife who caught his husband in his secret affair. Also, perhaps it signifies death that will soon arrived between the lover as it will serve as a punishment from a sinful deed they committed.

1. The meaning of the firelight in the poem is that, it serves as an assessor to the persona, serves as a guide or an enlightenment upon doing wrong things. In the poem, it is said that the firelight is dying and it slides along the quirt. This only indicates that it is losing its purpose to guide and enlighten the persona of what he is about to be doing. That is why it does really matter that it is loose because losing the light can lead to darkness and evil just like losing light in a persons mind can lead to horrible disgusting thoughts.

2. There are quite few senses that are embedded in the poem: touch, sight and auditory. First, the sense of touch, in the process of unravelling the poem sense of touch is vividly stated in the lines, “She rubs against me and I feel her nails”. Second is the sense of sight which is very obvious in the poem because the involvement of the said sense is clear from the first stanza in which the persona talks about his girl in tight jeans and up to the last where he describes the color of the birds’ eyes saying its golden and that its small grey fur is pulsing in its grip. Lastly, the sense of hearing, it is evident in the lines, “And then the noise. Something is dropped. It grates against the attic beams”. Now each senses creates or lets the readers imagine the whole picture and vibe of the poem.

3. Based on my own interpretation and understanding, the great black presence intends to interrupt and wake the persona from the sinful act that he’s been doing. It seems as though the persona is so into the lovemaking that he’s been carried away to the fact that he needs to be disrupted from of the happenings. Also, the great black presence could serve as a representation of the inner conscience of the persona. It’s as if triggering the mindset of the persona that what he’s been doing is wrong. Its presence affects both the persona and the girl in a way that in every wrong doing that someone commits there will be always be a corresponding consequence.

1. In the first stanza of the poem, it can be noticed that the firelight was intentionally put out. And for me, the firelight represents the divine light. If you are doing something you are not ashamed of you don’t need to hide but as what I have understood in the poem the two lovers were certainly doing something sinful which is not acceptable that is why they put out the fire intentionally and hide their wrong doings.

Yes, it does matter because the persona is aware that they are doing something wrong but still they continued what they were doing.

2. The senses that were activated in me while reading the poem are the auditory, tactile and visual.

The sense of touch, it is when the two of them went together to the second floor where they felt the endless wind and when the girl rubs against the man feeling her nails. the auditory or sense of hearing, it is when the persona heard the noise from the attic when something was dropped and there was a grating in the attic beam. And lastly the visual or sense of sight. It involves when the lovers were going to the attic as they watch the outside of the house. The lake, the headstones, and the tress.

3. For what I have understood in the poem the great black presence means the conscience of the man. The two of them already know that they are doing something wrong or sinful but they still continued what they were doing but when something was dropped in the attic the man is the only person who hears the sound, something the poem was telling that he was given a warning by the great black presence. As the man reaches the attic, he saw the shattered skeletons of the bones and from what I understood it means that every wrong doings of man there will always a consequence.

3. The presence of the great black presence has a big impact to the lovers. First is that it will remind the persona of the great sin he has done, it will remind him of his faith that has died the moment they made love with the girl. As a domino effect, second, they would stop from what they are doing. Maybe in the morning they would part ways and bid goodbye forever for the persona already had realized his over lapses, or maybe that very night their lives will end together with their faith. All of those we do not know because the ending of the poem is cliff hung.

1. The firelight for me, stands as the faith of the persona. In the first line of the poem, the firelight is said as a dying firelight. For me it means that the faith of the persona is dying, because he knows that he is about to do a sinful act. Moreover, the persona seems to be bothered and seems to already have conscience about what he and his lover is about to do yet because the line "although we are alone, I locked the door" suggests that something is bothering him and for me, that is his faith. The very reason why for me, the poem is entitled "The End of the Weekend" because the end of the weekend is Sunday, a day for God and for our faith. As for the follow up question, this loosen faith mattered a lot to the poem and to the persona himself because through his loosen faith, he was able to realize the prize of his misake later that night.

2. The following senses are involved in the poem

Sight- this is involved in the poem because the persona describes everything as if the reader is really in that cabin. For example, the line " a dying firelight slides along the quirt" is a description using the sense of sight.
Touch - aside from the lovers mating and feeling each other, the wind that blows to the skin of the persona is also a manifestation of the sense of touch.
Hearing- apart from the lovers' moans, the dropping of the great black presence also proved that a sense of hearing is involved.

3. The presence of the great black presence has a big impact to the lovers. First is that it will remind the persona of the great sin he has done, it will remind him of his faith that has died the moment they made love with the girl. 1.) Since the poem is clearly symbolic and functional, I think the firelight simply means a "light" which represents as guidance or supervision when its dark.I can relate it as our Faith.
Yes, the light which is supposed to be the guidance is dying because the persona choses to neglect it without minding its own consequence.
2.) Senses activated in reading the poem were:
First is Tactile, this is when the man feel the nails of the girl.
Second is Visual,I can visualize the desciption of the place (creepy as I imagined) and when the persona describe the girl in his tight jeans.
Third is Auditory, when their love-making is interrupted by a noise.
I think these senses makes a creative way to relate things which is symbolically different.
3.) Maybe the presence of the great black does not only mean as a disturbance in the love-scene of the lovers, I think it represents as a conscience which reminds them that there's a judgement in all wrong doings. The man is aware of their sinful act but chooses to neglect it and tasted those fleeting happiness.

1. The firelight signifies his youth. It is important in the story because the firelight is his youth and it doesn’t last so he ascends to the 2nd floor of the cabin and had sex in the darkness which is the stage of maturity and lastly the attic in where he investigates the sound that interrupted their sexual act.

2. The senses evoked as I read the story are: kinesthetic, visual, tactile, and audio. Kinesthetic is the sense of movements in the poem (“We rise together to the second floor.”), visual is the sense of sight or the act of seeing (“My girl in skin tight jeans…”), tactile is the sense of touch (“She rubs against me and I feel her nails.”), and lastly, audio, it is the sense of hearing (“And then the noise. Something is dropped. It grates against the attic beams.”). These senses work together to show vivid imagery to the readers letting them imagine what is going on in the poem.

3. The presence of the great black, for me, shows that the man fears the unknown. The uncertainty of life. The line “Although we are alone, I lock the door.” Shows that he is wary of what he doesn’t know. He went to the attic alone to check out on what is making the noise, this meant that he is past the stage after his maturity and now is facing or shall I say his journey to death. There isn’t any effect on the part of the lover because the consummating act of the man and the woman was not forsaken by God. It simply shows the reality of death because in the poem to know death is having to die.

1.In the literal context, the dying firelight gives light to a very dark or dim place. But figuratively, I suggest that it conveys a message that signifies the persona's life. The thing is, it’s dying. For me, it does matter because it depicts the future that his life is near to his end. Thus, the meeting of the great black presence at the end of the poem.

2.The whole poem are indulged with a lot of vivid imagery and scenes that made me feel more connected to the poem. The senses that are involved as I read the poem are:
Visual
-The dying firelight gives a vivid imagery that the place is dark and dim.
-The description of his girl wearing a skin tight jeans.
-The description of the two persona standing up to go upstairs and to do something (You know what I mean)
-The slow unloosening of the girl’s underthings gives the hint that things are getting steamy. (This is what I meant.)
-A boneyard of mice skeletons.
-And the description of the black presence with golden eyes that is gripping into a small grey fur, which I assumed to be a mice that is soon to be killed or already killed.

Auditory
-This is executed best when the guy heard something upstairs and when the great black presence beats its wings in wrath (but the motion of how the bird beats its wings is under kinesthetic)

Tactile
- The description of his girl whose fingers are in the page of Captain Marriat (perhaps it’s a book)
-The locking of the door actually made me felt the cold feeling of a doorknob.
- When the girl rubs against him and he felt her nails. This is too sensual.

3. The great black presence is described to “beats its wings in wrath” and to have “its golden eyes.” I tried to picture out a huge black bird with intimidating golden eyes to make it more vivid. Yes, the couple were interrupted by the sound made by the black presence which led the guy to check the attic. He felt scared based from his action that he was armed with a belt. But, was it death that interrupted them? Was it the presence of death that he acknowledged? For me, Yes.

1. In my opinion, the meaning of the firelight in the poem is that, it serves as guide or enlightenment to brighten up the thoughts of the persona upon doing wrong act. But in the first stanza of the poem, it said that the firelight is dying slides along the quirt. This indicates that the faith of the persona is dying.
Yes, it does really matter because the persona is aware of what they are doing was wrong yet they continued of what there doing.
2.The senses that were active in me while reading the poem were : Visual,Auditory,Kinesthetic.
First was Visual sense - by the lines where in the persona described the "girl in his skin tight jeans, and the unloosening of the underthings and as he locked the door". Second was Auditory sense- "We rise together to the second floor.Outside, across the lake, an endless wind Whips against the headstones of the dead and wails" and lastly the kinesthetic sense were the last stanza where" A great black presence"
3. For me the presence of the "great black presence" in the poem is a warning to the persona and his girl and it has to do with the love affair that is happening between the both of them because in the first place they were doing a shameful act or sexual act and its an immoral act and by that, they committed a sin. That's why the "great black presence disturbance and warned them in order to stop what they are doing.

1. In my own point of view, the firelight symbolizes direction. Wherein it gives guide to the persona wether he's doing the right thing or not.
Yes, it really does because the person is cognizant to his act if it is good or bad.
2. We have:
Visual- the firelight itself gives vision to the place that it is dark and dim.
Tactile- when the girl rub her nails against the man
Auditory- when the guy heard a noise upstairs.
3. Based on my understanding, the presence of the great black which made a noise and disturbance during their love-making, gave them a chance that indeed they're doing the wrong act
