On Faithfulness (Odyssey)

In the tumultuous years of modern life, we have always wanted someone who could stand by and for us. Someone who would respect and view us as partners and not just mere servants or the like. Most of us, if not all of us, look for that someone who would be true and faithful to us. But how do we define faithfulness? Is it the ability to resist any form of temptation? Or, it is the ability to bear in mind the existence of our significant other? Does the definition of the word change through time?

Odysseus is loyal as he puts it. He came to live with Circe and Kalypso. He had enjoyed his years of stay with these two women. Now, isn't loyalty and faithfulness tied with one another? If they are, can we then consider Odysseus to be faithful still to Penelope? If they are not, then what is the difference between loyalty and faithfulness?

Those two words, when searched in the dictionary, as their meaning says, those two are simply tied with each other. And as to Odysseus, he had been faithful all the time to Penelope. He might have lived with those two women, Circe and Calypso, but he had just done those for he had made sacrifices. Maybe he had longed for someone's touch when with Calypso. And he might had been tempted through those years being away with Penelope. But he had stayed faithful and loyal with his heart and soul to his only woman, Penelope. It was also shown when he had done everything just to be home and to be with Penelope's arms and by the time he had chosen not to be immortal and to stay mortal and die in the arms of Penelope being a man.

Technically, those two words are tied with each other. With regards to Odysseus, as a man, i understand him. Yes! he happened to have an affair with those two women, but it doesn't mean his loyalty and faithfulness had depreciated as a husband. With his situation during his adventure, although those two temptations came to be as a pleasure to other side being a man but i saw and felt his agony longing for his family so what he did was part of the consequences and all of those were his sacrifices just for survival. Generally, he beared everything just to go back home. .home to his family.

loyalty and faithfulness.two words that for an instance may mean thesame but difinitely have diffirent meaning. Loyalty is you are true to someone but doesnt mean that you cannot be another one while faithfulness is being devoted to someone that what ever happens she/he will always be in you. I can say that Odysseus is faithful to Penelope because even though has with diffirent girls still in the end he chooses Penelope and he never forgets about her.

Faithfulness and loyalty, these words are not really the same by description, but are linked together, especially in terms of love.
I think Odysseus remains faithful to Penelope, though he had stayed and made love to Calypso and Circe, but as what Hermes said "you cannot refuse a goddess". But the fact that in every place Odysseus stayed, he did not forgot his family specially his wife, Penelope, though his life with the goddesses are very ideal. But if it was an ordinary man, I think they would have already forgotten their family and would prefer to live with a goddess.

Loyal and faithful? I guess those two words are just linked together in some way or another. Odysseus both had those two characteristics to Penelope. For years and years of being away from Penelope and Telemachus, he's ever been loyal and faithful even though he slept several years with Circe and Kalypso. Maybe i can say that even though she really loved Penelope so much, he can never resist the longing of a man to a woman physically. But then again, he strived really hard and even swallow his pride to talk and beg to Poseidon so that he may return to Ithaca and live together with Penelope to which his body and soul belongs.

Faithfulness and Loyalty are not same in meaning but has a very important part in each other. Specifically Odysseus had been faithful to Penelope because he used to do a lot of sacrifices and fought against enemies just to let himself go back ti Ithaca even he is tempted with another woman he showed to everyone his love for his wife and for his son and even for a long long years a part from Penelope he still go back to his family in Ithaca.

If Odysseus is to be describe between LOYALTY and FAITHFULNESS,i could say Odysseus is faithful to Penelope.. despite of all the pleasures he experienced in different women,of all the discouraging thoughts they have given to him,,it was still Penelope who he was longing for..he faced all the trials just to return home..after 20 years of being far to your loved ones, you might surrender the hope of seeing them again, but not Odysseus..
For me,the difference between the two words is that being loyal is the same with being true to a person, and being faithful is that whatever happens, that person is always in mind, heart and soul.

For me again, Odysseus is still considered as faithful to Penelope for even though he enjoys the company of Circe and Calypso but he was able to think the best memories of her wife Penelope. In which it symbolizes that he is just for Penelope and no one can take him from her.
Loyalty, is showing how responsible a person on his obligations to his wife as a loyal husband. That was the case of Odysseus.

Faithfulness? this was the hardest test in our lives, in this generations you could hardly resist temptations. for Odysseus, i can describe and defend him as a faithful husband to Penelope, even if there are a lot of temptations crossed his way, and even if the goddesses tempted him but at the end he still end up looking and searching ways to see Penelope and his homeland Ithaca.there is always one girl in his heart and that is penelope, he fought all the trails in his life hoping he could come back to Ithaca, embrace his son and wife as soon as possible.

In some other way, the two words are just similar and connected ot each other but they are not exactly the same.

Odysseus had been faithful and loyal to his wife Penelope even if he had slept with other woman like Circle and Calypso. For 20 years away from his family and for how many circumstances he had passed after troy, he had not forgotten them, not even once..!!
And he always long to go home and be with Penelope's arm again..!

"Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice."
-Woodrow T. Wilson

I believe that both loyalty and faithfulness is closely tied with each other because upon seeing the thesaurus, it is synonymous. Thus, when we base the situation of Odysseus and Penelope on the said meaning, they really do not have that faith and loyalty towards each other. But, I believe that its an exemption because both of them suffered a lot of sacrifices and hindrances and they both survived with it, so in other words it shows that it was just a test for the both of them.
Actually, I don't believe that Odysseus was happy with his stay with those goddesses because every moment that he is with them it is still Penelope which he had in mind. Also, every time he is given a chance to go he don't hesitate to leave and still overcoming all odds along his way just to be back in his wife, son and kingdom.

I believe that Odysseus is really faithful to Penelope because he does everything just to go back to Ithaca even though it cost several years to do it. Though Odysseus have romance with Circe and Calypso, he never forgets Penelope and still chooses to go back to be with his only son and wife. I also believe that the several years that he has romance with this two goddesses are due to longing of times he had with his wife when his gone.

Those two words, faithful and loyalty, have different meanings. And as to what Odysseus have shown from the movie Odyssey, Odysseus had been faithful to Penelope ever since. He might just have an affair with the two goddess, Circe and Calypso that is just because of the sufferings that Poseidon gave him. Even though goddess Circe offered him to be immortal, Odysseus refused and rather wants to stay mortal and die in the arms of her wife, Penelope. Odysseus stayed faithful and loyal to her wife, in his heart and soul.

Basing on what Odysseus did while he was away from home he had been faithful to Penelope however he was not loyal. It is because in my own perception when you said that a person is loyal that person still gets attracted to others, appreciates beauty, still flirt with others in some means yet at the end of the day that person knows where his heart really belongs. On the other hand when you said faithfulnes it must be in terms of both body and soul.A faithful person do not have the time to be attracted to others, his attention is only for the person he loves. That is why for me Odysseus is not faithful.

As the dictionary defines loyalty and faithfulness, the two words has still a connection in another way.
Between Penelope and Odysseus, they are tied together with loyalty and faithfulness as time goes on. But, as time passes by, the loyalty of Odysseus had break when he meet the two goddesses, which would probably be a sacrifice just to claim his men back in Circe's island, and for survival in Calypso's island.
Even though he still committed sin, faithfulness still remains for his heart still belong to his one and only love, Penelope. He did his best only to survive from those obstacles he crosses, searching ways to overcome the loneliness and emptiness he had suffer.

Truly faithfulness and loyalty are tied with each other because when it is searched, those words have almost the same meaning. In that way, Odysseus can be considered to be faithful still to Penelope through his suffers under Poseidon and sacrifices while soaring the land of Ithaca where his family living. But as the destiny brings him to Circe and Calypso he was just longing for someone to make him comfort thinking those are only one of the challenges made by Poseidon. With those decisions, he is just shown his Faithfulness and Loyalty to her wife Penelope by pursuing his task to don't loss hope in seeking the land of Ithaca. Loyalty and faithfulness almost have the same meaning in dictionary. So I can say that loyalty and faithfulness are tied up together because they are closely related with their meaning. How can a person be loyal to his partner when he is not faithful? Of course there are really temptations in life that will test our faithfulness and loyalty and if we have not build strong foundation about it , there is really a big possibility that we cannot overcome it. Like Odysseus if he had strong foundation of faithfulness and loyalty to Penelope he will be able to overcome the temptations of the goddesses.

When you consult Mr. Webster, faithfulness and loyalty are indeed linked with each other especially in terms of love..

Eventhough Odysseus had lived with other women namely Circe and Calypso, I can still say that he as a husband had really been so faithful to his wife Penelope because amidst all those tricks and magical powers the women had thrown to him, he still manage to escape or be away from them.. It is because, deep in his heart, he is reserving his true love for Penelope and Telemachus..
And as we have read upon his adventures, he really did his best just to go back to Ithaca..He had fought many weird creatures just to fulfill his longing to his family...
In the end, Odysseus like any other hero, went back to his home and finally meet again his love ones..

in my perception, i defined faithfulness as a sense of believing in one's promises and keeping it even sometimes it causes pain. it is keeping on believing in a certain thing without any assurance if when or where it will become fulfilled.

for me, being faithful is a factor to resist any form of temptation. because you always bare in your heart and mind of what you truly believe, and there is a psychological effect that will cause guilt and fear if you let yourself to commit temptations. and this guilt and fear will lead us to a lifetime regrets. and i believe that the definition of this word will never change through time. because if we keep on believing theres always faith on us.

and about the situation of Odysseus and penelope, i can say that penelope is the one who is faithful to odysseus while odysseus is loyal to penelope. in my own understanding, i can differentiate faithfulness as a desired feelings towards the person we truly love. whatever he hes said and promised, we heartily keep it and believe it to come true and to fulfilled, as if theres no other person will try to destruct your feelings. while loyalty is keeping the real thing, not just keeping it until it will be in real. sometimes loyalty cant resist temptations. a loyal person may forget of what he had promised but still he wanted to be with his/her truly love partner.

They are synonyms, but I think the circumstances in which they are used are different. Loyalty is an unswerving devotion to a person or a thing. In many ways, this can be positive, but it can also be negative. Stalkers have a kind of loyalty mixed with dangerous behaviors. Faithfulness is steadfast in allegiance, or firm in adherence to promises or in observance of duty. To me, this means doing things that you may not like in efforts to help someone who has earned your faithfulness. Loyalty shifts more than faithfulness in my experience. some would say that if it changes, then it really wasn't loyalty to begin with. Husbands and wives are supposed to be faithful to each other, even when times are tough. However, if they aren't faithful to each other, one of the partners has a newfound loyalty for someone else. This may be temporary, or passing, but faithfulness is forever. in conclusion, Odysseus is faithfull as well as loyal to her wife Penelope though he has an affair with Circe but it doesn't change his love to her because from the inner most of his heart he did not not attempt to forget Penelope in his life.

He had done those things but it doesn't mean that he had forgotten penelope, she still remained deep inside his heart and he lives for penelope alone in such a way that he really did his best to go home despite of those challenges he have encountered and the promises of other women to him to be immortal. He faced the struggles along his way just to be with his beloved penelope.

I still consider Odysseus faithful to Penelope because, even if Odysseus go with another women,he is always thinking Penelope, and inside his heart is Penelope and no one can replace his wife in his heart. He is still doing his best so that he can go back to Ithaca so that he, Penelope and his son can live as one family.

In the dicctionary faithfulness mean firm and unchanging in attachment to a person cause or like.Loyalty and faithfuness are tied with each other. The definitin of the term change through time dependng on the people's perception, we have diff. understanding. Oddyseus is faithful to Penelope because in many years that he was away, to be with his wife was his only dream. And he was longing for Penelope. He is with the Goddess because of his mission, even he was tempted, for me to be physically present is not the measurement of being faithful but in the heart, the love the he felt to Penelope.

Actually the two words are not the same, but they are just connected in some other way.

Odysseus really have that faithful to Penelope, although he slept with calypso and circe for many years he never forget about his family left in Ithaca. Maybe he just missed someone's touch of love and satisfaction but it does not mean that after all he would live with that God were he slept with. But then again he try to go back home to see and to live with his family. he still have that loyalty to his wife because he never lose hope to go back home.

Faithfulness of Odysseus to her wife Penelope have fall down, as he was on his long journey going back to his promise land of Ithaca. No, I don’t think Odysseus is still faithful to Penelope for being faithful requires being trustworthy. In his case, because of his long journey and many trials and challenges he had to face, he engages a relationship to Circe and Calypso to aid his longing to his wife but his action is unacceptable. Does the distance between him and his wife gives him the right to flirt around? No, that is not being truly faithful in my opinion. Although I admire his will of coming back to his wife after being tempted, which proves his loyalty to his wife.
So now, we will see the difference of being faithful as having undivided loyalty while being loyal means even there are lapses in how we do our duties and obligations to the person whom we entrusted our life and dedication, we remain at their side, continuing our constant service and dedication.

...when we talk of faithfulness, you are committed that much to your love one that you don't bother to look for somebody else. you resist every kind of temptation that comes along the way because you are focus to the one you love. loyalty on the other hand, is somewhat related to faithfulness but your attention is not that focus. you still tend to lookf for somebody else, but, at the end of the day you still comes home to the one you really love...

in the case of Odysseus, he has his own reason why he has to be with other women..we just can't blame him for it..but its undeniable that in his heart and mind is his wife Penelope.

Faithfulness and Loyalty are synonymous in meaning, especially interms of love.As to Odyseus, even he had an affair to those two women,Circe and Calypso,he just make it because he is longing for his family and faces the consequences, but he had remained faithful and loyalty to his wife Penelope and son Telemacus

Faithfulness and loyalty are words tied with one another but has different meaning. With all those things Odysseus had experience, his loyalty to Penelope still exist but his faithfulness to her depreciated. When he chose to make love with Circe and Kalypso and tried to live with them for many years, He became unfaithful to her wife. He must be trustworthy enough for him to consider as faithful but then he hadn't resisted the temptations around him. For many years of living with other women, He is still longing to come back home and live with his true love-Penelope and to his son, making him still loyal to them but years is long enough before he decided to go back home and prove his loyalty. What he had done shows the difference between his loyalty and faithfulness.

Loyalty is when a man met someone , flirt a little, enjoy the moments but at the end still going back to you. And faithfulness is when a man sees and appreciates beauty of other but keeping you in his head, and would not even flirt with other women. In Odysseus case, he was trapped in the islands of these ever beautiful women and resistance is impossible since the two were goddess and as what Hermes said, "You can't resist a goddess." But Odysseus though having a good time with Circe and Calypso's beds still refuse to remain in either of their islands. Calypso's beauty is far better than the mortal Penelope of course, whose body is subject to deterioration. She offer Odysseus marriage and immortality but he doesn't accept this all for his heart is longing for his wife.

With these i can say that Odysseus is loyal but not faithful. Faithfulness in marriage has a connotation that you vow to never touch other woman but your wife. Maybe in Greek culture, he can be considered as Loyal and Faithful but following the view of a filipina, he is just loyal but not faithful.

Actually faithfulness depends on how you view it. Yes, it maybe is inflicted with modernization where environment influences human’s social and mental [views] behavior. But most of us stereotypically viewed faithfulness which Merriam Webster meant firm in adherence in observance of duty and we somehow stick to that.
Odysseus in the first place was not loyal, for loyalty is defined as firm resistance to any temptation, which Circe and Calypso were considered as one [temptation] outside Penelope-Odysseus relationship.
a. Loyalty and faithfulness tied with one another? It is. The terms are tied with one another in the sense that they are synonymous. But term being a synonym of the other term does not always indicate the same thought, there is sure difference. In logical perspective, if one is faithful, he/she could either be loyal or not, but if he/ she is loyal then he/ she is always faithful. Simply faithfulness offers a wider point of view when it comes to love.
Example that exemplifies faithfulness:
Your bf is flirting with other women in the morning but at night he could not think of anybody except the love of his life, you.
Example that exemplifies loyalty:
Your bf all day and night long is always thinking of you and has not flirted with someone else for he thought of himself having a commitment, which is your relationship.
b. Odysseus could be considered as faithful but not loyal.

Loyalty implies a strong resistance to temptations while faithfulness offers a lingering impression “understanding human nature: its imperfections and the term forgiveness”.

Faithfulness
An absolute commitment yet is ready to accept imperfections and is willing to give forgiveness. Sees not what is expected and cares what there is to care.

For me,the difference between this two words, being loyal is the same way of being true to a person, and being faithful is that whatever happens, that person is always in your heart, soul and mind. Even though Odysseus had an affair with the two women but still his love is for Penelope.

Loyalty and Faithfulness, are two words that has different descriptions, but are tied together as one, in terms of love. Actually, it depends on the situation, in the case of Odysseus(Lord of Ithaca), he was under by Circe(the sorceress that turns human into animal)and he had no choice but to take Circe in bed to be able to turn back his men into their normal forms. He was also landed in the island of Calypso(a sea-nymph)were they become lovers in that island. Later on Calypso offered Odysseus to become an immortal but his everlasting love to Penelope never changed. Even if he cant refuse to a goddess or a queen, his love and affection to his wife still remains the same and his being true to his words. Me myself still considers Odysseus as a loyal and faithful husband to his beautiful wife, Penelope.

Loyalty and faithfulness as we all know are synonym with each other. As Odysseus goes on in his journey, he met two women and have an unexpected affair with them. I think, he remained faithful still to Penelope even when his once with Kalypso and Circe, all he think about is Penelope and she is one of the reasons why Odysseus is very eager to go back to Ithaca. Loyalty and faithfulness is just tied to each other. But for me, being faithful is somewhat deeper than that of loyalty. Odysseus had been faithful to Penelope but he hadn't been a loyal husband. For his long span of journey, maybe it's just inevitable for a man to long someone who would be there for him physically. I suppose that is the reason why Odysseus stayed with Circe and Calypso. But with all those circumstances he had been, he really strive to be back and be with Penelope. That really manifested how faithful he is.

Loyalty and Faithfulness has just the same significance in a relationship.Odysseus is still faithful to Penelope inspite of those temptation that led him to live w/ the two women. He did it w/ a great sacrifice. At first we can say that Odysseus is not faithful because of that, but he did everything just to get back to Penelope's arms and to be home in Ithaca.

faithfulness and loyalty... somewhat synonymous but not the same. faithfulness is putting your trust into something you cannot prove is there or even exist. Loyalty on the other hand is sticking to a certain feeling group, or something you have committed to, and never abandoning it. Odysseus is not very faithful to her wife because he made other relationship towards other women. Meanwhile, even without certainty that his beloved Penelope is still waiting for him, still he wanted to go home to see her once more and finds out whether she still loves him or not, that proves his loyalty is for his Penelope only!

yes . . .those two words are just the same if basing on its meaning. .and Odysseus have it,being lyal and faithful to Penelope. . .'coz no matter he was on relation with the two girl but still his only life was Penelope. . .and he sacrifice a lot of things just to stay alive for his wife and son. .yes,, he was just tempted by the situation.but even though he made a mistakes he still have way to correct those things,,because he know whom he really belongs and owned.
